Lisa Ramos Guy Code

Model and television personality Lisa Ramos knows a thing or two when it comes to dating. During her time on MTV's Guy Code, Lisa's fans would would write in by the thousands seeking her advice on dating. Humbled by the outpour of requests, Lisa decided to answer her fans with her debut book, Pizza & Chill? How To Kind of Sorta Date. In it, Lisa explores the awkwardness behind modern dating and ensures readers that whatever season of the dating life you're in, you are not alone. Modern Brown Girl spoke with Lisa about her rising career, common dating mistakes and where to meet your future bae.

The public first met you during your time on America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 13. What did you learn about yourself during that experience?

I learned that I’m not built for reality television. It was fun and I was only on for one episode, but it takes 2 weeks to film. In that time, I met my best friend so that was one of the best things to have happened to me.

You worked as an expert panelist on MTV’s “Guy Code” and hosted The Flama’s “Secret Life of Babes.” Is hosting something that you’d like to make a full-time passion?

It wasn’t something I looked for. I went to visit my friend on set [from Guy Code] and a couple of weeks later the producers asked me, “Hey do you want to be on the show?” I didn’t have to audition, I didn’t have to do anything like that. It just fell on my lap. It was very serendipitous.
I would love to do more hosting. It’s never the same job day-to-day. You never know what to expect. I get to be myself and I don’t have to expose any part of my life that I’m not comfortable with.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Professionally, I was always obsessed with the Victoria’s Secret models. Growing up, I loved looking at the catalogues with my sister. That’s how I first became interesting in modeling. Then I took musical theater lessons and my teacher suggested that I get into modeling. Personally, my mom and my aunt inspire me. My aunt is well educated - she’s a Principle and has a Master’s Degree. My sister is also in the education system. I look up to all of the women in my life. Everyone in my family, really. They’ve all been super supportive of me as well.

Let’s talk about your book, Pizza & Chill: How To Kind of Sorta Date. How did the idea come about?

I was on Guy Code and the format of that show was about exploring topics regarding men and the underlying code of conduct between them. After a few seasons, my social media platforms were full of thousands of questions from guys and girls about my perspective on relationships and dating. Anywhere from, “what should I wear on a first date?” to "how long should I wait to call?" I decided to answer all of questions in a book, with my own personal stories and advice.

In your opinion, what is the #1 dating mistake that women make?

Getting ahead of themselves and going to fast. You will never regret taking things slow!

What are some rules for dating a Latina?

You have to like to eat! I love trying out different restaurants. Also, watch your tone! Our parents never accepted certain tones of voice when talking with them, so we learn not to accept it as well from others, especially in a relationship.

What do you look for in a relationship?

Respect, consistency, and mutual effort.

What’s your most embarrassing dating story?

One time I was on a date, and everything was going really well. As we were leaving the restaurant, I violently ran into a clear glass door. My date was like, “Oh my God, are you okay?” It was so embarrassing.

Where do you suggest people meet? How do you meet your dates?

Everyone that I’ve ever had relationships with were met through mutual friends. I was friends with my ex-boyfriend before we started dating. I think you need to get out there and look for events or something in your city that you like to do. There is always something to do – get yourself out there. Finding someone with mutual interests is more possible through social events, friends and activities. Don't solely rely on dating apps. Mix it up.

If you could have lunch with one person (dead or alive) who would it be and what would you order?

I'd like to go to lunch with Maya Angelou and I’d order soul food. Since she’s from the south, I’m sure she’d know exactly what to order.

Who are your beauty and style role models?

I’ve always loved Adriana Lima – she has such a classic face style and she never seems to age. As far as style, I really love Rihanna – she's a style icon and does whatever she wants.

What are 5 beauty products that you can’t live without?

Coconut Oil – I use it for absolutely everything. Water, green tea, it's so important to stay hydrated. I'm obsessed with Whirl by MAC. In fact, I have so many beauty products, it's crazy. I just love collecting products. I also use Neutrogena's Clean & Clear Continuous Acne Cleanser. It's the closest thing you can get to a prescription without seeing a dermatologist.
